April is National Volunteer Month, which means it’s the perfect time to celebrate the amazing people who give their time and energy to make a difference—and to encourage even more folks to get involved. Across the country, millions of people volunteer in big and small ways, strengthening their communities and building a culture of care and connection.

Here in Central Oregon, we’re lucky to have a community full of generous, kind-hearted people who step up to help others. Whether it’s serving meals at a local shelter, mentoring a kid, fostering a rescue pet, or helping out at a community event, volunteers are the glue that holds our community together. They’re the reason so many local nonprofits, shelters, and support programs can do the incredible work they do every day.

At Central Oregon Collective, we see the power of volunteerism firsthand. Our volunteers help adults with disabilities live full, connected lives, and they make our mission possible. But we also know that we’re just one piece of the bigger picture. There are so many ways to make a difference in Bend, whether it’s caring for the environment, supporting unhoused neighbors, helping animals, or simply showing up for someone who needs a friend.

So, this National Volunteer Month, we want to say a huge thank you to those already making a difference—and invite you to jump in, too! If you've been looking for a way to connect, give back, and be part of something bigger, now is the perfect time. Because when we all take care of each other, our whole community thrives.

What’s in It for You? (Hint: A Lot!)

We know that volunteering is about giving back, but the truth is—it’s just as rewarding for you as it is for those you’re helping. Whether you're serving meals at a soup kitchen, spending time with seniors, fostering shelter animals, or helping at a community event, your time and effort make a difference—and you get a lot in return, too!

Make a difference – Even the smallest acts of kindness can have a lasting impact on someone’s life.

Meet new people – Connect with like-minded people who are passionate about creating a stronger, more inclusive community.

Learn valuable skills – From teamwork and leadership to problem-solving and event planning, volunteering can help you grow personally and professionally.

Boost your well-being – Studies show that volunteering reduces stress, increases happiness, and even improves overall health.

Beyond individual benefits, volunteering strengthens our entire community. When people come together to help one another, it creates a sense of belonging and shared purpose. Imagine what Central Oregon would look like if everyone contributed just a little time—neighbors helping neighbors, businesses supporting local causes, and organizations uniting for a common goal.

Ways to Get Involved in Central Oregon

No matter what your passions or schedule look like, there’s a place for you to give back. Here are just a few ways you can help in Bend and beyond:

  • Serve at a soup kitchen or food bank – Places like Shepherd’s House, Bethlehem Inn, and the Giving Plate need volunteers to help prepare and distribute meals to those experiencing food insecurity.
  • Support individuals with disabilities – Join us at Central Oregon Collective, where you can help adults with disabilities lead full and rich lives by assisting with activities, transportation, or events.
  • Help at an animal shelter – The Humane Society of Central Oregon and other local rescues rely on volunteers to walk dogs, socialize with animals, and assist with adoptions.
  • Join a park or trail clean-up – Keep Bend beautiful by volunteering with The Deschutes Land Trust or Bend Parks & Rec for conservation and restoration projects.
  • Support the unhoused community – Get involved with Habitat for Humanity to help build affordable homes or assist at shelters that provide vital resources.
  • Spend time with seniors – Assisted living centers and programs like Meals on Wheels are always looking for volunteers to chat, play games, or provide companionship.
  • Help at a local arts or cultural organization – The Tower Theatre and High Desert Museum often seek volunteers for events, educational programs, and community outreach.
  • Tutor or mentor kids – Programs like Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon or after-school programs need mentors to help guide and inspire the next generation.
  • Get involved in environmental initiatives – Join Oregon Natural Desert Association or other conservation groups to protect Central Oregon’s natural beauty.

Building a Resilient, Connected Community

At the heart of every strong community is people helping people. Volunteering fosters trust, connection, and resilience—qualities that make Central Oregon such a special place. This is especially true in times of crisis. Whether it’s wildfire relief efforts, food insecurity, or mental health support, volunteers step in when the community needs them most. It’s this collective spirit of generosity and compassion that keeps Central Oregon thriving, no matter what challenges arise.

At Central Oregon Collective, we believe that inclusion, empowerment, and compassion make communities thrive. And while we’re proud of the work we do, we know we’re just one piece of a much bigger puzzle. When we all step up, work together, and look out for one another, we create a stronger, healthier, and more connected Central Oregon.
